HOW TO TAKE THE BEST FLATLAY PHOTO
Flatlay Photo |
What is Flatlay Photo?
Flatlay photos are photos of items which are lay down flat. Flatlay photos are a great way of showcasing one or lots of item at a time, in a frame. Flatlay photos usually tell a story where each items are related to or talk about something.

Steps to have the best Flatlay Photo:
1. Backdrop
The backdrop is the crucial part of a perfect flatlay photo. It should be simple and something that will not distract your viewers from focusing on the main elements. Also a backdrop should elevate the vibrancy of colours of your product without making it look too busy and messy.
Here are some ideas of backdrops that you can use:

Or you can use as simple as a clear, light colour bed sheets.
2. Light
In Photography, lightings are very important. I prefer Natural Light compare to Artificial Lighting and the best way to reach the perfect amount of Natural Lights is close to a window or in a bright room where you get enough sunlights. I usually choose either morning or afternoon where you obtain the right amount of soft lights.
3. Composition
And here comes the most important part, the product setup. How to start? Don't just drop anything anywhere on the backdrop. First you need to realised that the product should look like in a frame so that you manage to capture all item in your viewfinder (camera). So what you do is to view a rectangle on you board or bed and start working from there.
Next is, what do you want to feature, one product or more. If it's one product, put it first then work around it so as not to distract it from the other elements and it to stay the hero product and if it's multiple products then re-arrange them well so that all pop up at the same time without one dominating the appearance of the other. Don't forget to leave enough space in between so that it balance out the image. The photo below is an example where I have feature only one product.

4. Product Setup
As we know "Less is more", so never try to overcrowd the space you have. Too much will make it look too busy and too little will make it look empty. Next is to stick to the theme. If its about travel photo flatlay, add products like pen, diary, work case or pouch etc because don't forget your photo must be able to tell a story so you won't want to see makeup next to your food flatlay photo. Don't forget to introduce your creativity in your photos
5. Photography
When it comes to taking flatlay photos, as all the product needs to look flat from above, you need to be able to make your camera go straight on all the item. So you can either set it up on your shaggy rugs so it's easy to capture the photo or if they are on your bench top you can use a chair to take the photo. Make sure not to miss any item.
6. Theme
This one is all about your preference. Adding colours to your photos. So you can either create it from the photo itself by adding for example all products that are pink, like pink pen, pink diary or you can add products that you can easily edit with the presets you use. So this is entirely up to you. For some of my photos I prefer to see the product pop up with it's natural colours so I don't add any colourful filter to it, see an example below and you'll find more examples on my Instagram so don't forget to pop-in there for more inspiration.
